Greener Grass: How I felt about this book at the begining was '" Oh why did I have to get this book?" After I read the whole thing though it got really interesting. When I read the first few chapters they felt like they never would end. Once I got to about chapter fourteen I just couldn't stop reading it. I was only suposed to read till page 86 and I read to page 186. The book got a whole lot better once some of the explaining was done. I really connected to the main character and how she was feeling. At one part in the book I almost cried because the extraneous detail in the authors writing. I was actullay happy with the book I recived. - Hanna gilbert

Kathleen Byrne is the oldest out of three. She works at Mr. Lynch’s as a maid. She also does a lot of chores at home too. Her dad is leaving to go to England to help bring home wages. She knows when he’ll be back at the end of the summer or when their potato crop reaches the height of her younger sister Annie. They find out that their mom is having a baby and are excited that they will have another brother\sister. Kathleen (Kathleen Mary Margaret Byrne) is willing really to do anything, anything, to help her mom keep this baby wile her dad is in England. At this point in the book I wondered why her dad had to leave to find a job in England when he could find one at home. Later on my question was anwsered.

When I read my peers writing yeah it makes me challange my own thinking. Why, because they all have great ideas and thoughts. They have included things that I haven't but they also don't have some things I do. I enjoy reading what my group thinks about the novel and compring their thoughts to my own. Aliteration was a hard one to find in the novel. I had a really long night trying to find one. I think there is one but its hiding on me.

Antagonist:Who I think is the Antagonist in Greener Grass is Lynch, Lord Fraser, Tom and Kit. Why I think these people are is because of what they have to do to survive. I know that it might not be bad because they need to survive but some things they do are unnecessary even in the famine. Kit tries to kill Lynch (Tom's dad) because he left the O'Tools homeless.
Protagonist: Who I think is a protagonist is Kit, Mick, Da, Mam, Annie, Jack and Lizzie Plunkett. Why I think these people are is because they always think of others first. They never really cared about themselves unless the people they cared about were ok first.
Setting: Ireland 1847-The Byrne's House (Shack) and New Ross docks. Also "The Big House" which was the Lynch's mansion. It had extra doors leading to nowhere so that guest would think their house was bigger.
Conflict: The Great Famine was defiantly the biggest conflict I thought. Why I thought this was because all of the characters in the book had to deal with starvation except for Lord Fraser, Lady Fraser and the Lynches. The Byrne family (Kit, Annie, Jack, Mam and Da) had to eat seaweed soup a lot of the time. The O'Tools (Mick, Nan, Meg and Mrs.O'Tool) had nothing to eat, they were completely broke.
Climax: I think the Climax is when Kit tells her family that they are leaving to go to North America. At this point I was predicting the ending of the book. My prediction was half and half. The ending surprised me. I thought it would have ended a different way.
Resolution: Kit, Mick, Kit's Family (except her dad) and their new friends (Tommy, Ellen and Tish) head to Canada. It doesn't work out as well as Kit hoped it would have. In the End her and Mick board another ship heading in the same direction but a couple days behind the other ship (The one her family is on).

Similes: The place was as busy as a hill of ants. Page 244. The band carried us from one dance to another like a ship on the sea. Page 54.

"Hey Kit isn't that the Lynch boys?" As I looked, my stomach dropped in fear. They were really there. Jack wasn't trying to fool me he was right. "Do you know where this girl is?" The boys were riding around yelling and snarling at people who got in their way.They were showing a photo of me to every person they saw. I filled with terror and bit my lip trying not to cry. I knew what was going to happen but I couldn't let it show. "Its ok Jack I will get on board before they see me. I know it." As soon as the worlds left my mouth a voice shot me excitement and than disappointment. "Kit!, Jack!" It was Mick. "Shh! Mick you will give me away!" I looked up and saw Tom ride by without taking his eyes off me. I was dead! "NEXT" I moved forward to give my ticket hoping Tom loved me enough to let me go. I gave my ticket and walked up the long widening dock. I said goodbye to Mick and ran to meet up with mam, Jack, Annie and our new friends. I couldn't believe I was free, away from everything that happened, safe. thats why it burned when I felt the rough skinned hand grabbing my arm pulling me back. "Kit I am coming with you. See." He waved a brittle piece of paper with a punched hole in front of my wherry eyes. He really was coming. For some reason I was happy Mick was going to be their with me. Maybe because Tom was gone. maybe because hes always been their. I don't know and I don't care everything worked out and I was leaving. A couple painful hours later the boat left. We just got out of the harbor and I herd something that would have made me cry but it didn't I was wasn't scared anymore I was free. "Stop that boat!" "STOP" Tom must have spilled the beans.He must really not care anymore. What a Lynch! Mick held my hand as I looked away. I know they can yell and scream till the moon comes out but they don't mean anything to me anymore.
Its to late now I am gone.

Hanna, I like your poem! The transition from pure and innocent to evil and cruel is well done. Good work! Are there other examples of opposites/contrasts in the book? Good and evil is a constant theme in many works. Light and dark, hopeful and hopeless etc. Your efforts are noted! Ms C :)

This poem relates to Greener Grass because it shows the difference between Kit and Lynch. As it says Kit is loyal and brave but Lynch is mean and disrespectful. It shows two different sides to the book. A good side being Kit and a bad side being Lynch.
